Fashion design can be a fun and exciting business if you enjoy being creative and like to stay current with the latest clothing trends. While it is relatively simple to start a fashion design business or put together a few of your own designs from the comfort of your own home, few people realize how difficult it can actually be to truly "break in" to this industry. It can be cut-throat, harsh, and opinionated, and creating your own designs is only half the battle.

You can begin by sketching out several of your own designs on paper and then either sewing them together yourself, or hiring a design assistant to aid you in the process. Once you have working examples of your designs you may want to consider patenting the idea if it is new and innovative, or focus more of your financial efforts on marketing the idea to manufacturers, botiques, and retail stores. If you're already creative, making your designs is the easy part, but selling them is where you are either make it or break it. Because of the complexity here, most fashion designers consider attending a fashion school and getting a degree to become more educated and prepared. There are many famous designers who have started clothing lines from home and gone on to become multi-millionaires, but they can be few and far between. For starters, consider first making and protecting your design, and then get opinions from those closest to you. Based on your feedback, determine if you think it would be worthwhile to invest more money in attending trade and runways shows.

Sketch and sew together a few model examples of your ideas and get feedback from friends, family, and possibly some members of the public before deciding whether or not you should invest more money into marketing your creations. You may also want to consider patenting or trademarking your designs before publically displaying them.

As a design-focused person, be sure to stay on top of your "numbers" side of the business too. Work on developing a plan to determine how much money you will allocate where. If you don't plan where to use your resources most effectively, your winning design might end up going nowhere.
